| The Area Charmouth is a seaside village on the Dorset/Devon border with a population of 1000. It is on the Jurassic Coast which is a World Heritage Site. The Jurassic coast is England's first natural World Heritage Site. West Dorset achieved this owing to the unique geology of the area and Charmouth in particular is a fossil hunters paradise. There are many guided walks and instruction on fossil collecting which are run from the heritage centre at Charmouth beach. For walkers the South West coast path passes through Charmouth and because of landslips the path has been diverted and now passes past the entrance to Langmoor Manor. The National Trust Golden Cap Estate provides stunning walks along the cliffs and you are free to wander over acres of farmland without fear of trespass. Charmouth village is very well provided for with shops, post office, chemist, doctors and pubs.It is easily accessible with a regular bus service to Weymouth in the East and Exeter to the West. The mainline railway is at Axminster about 5 miles to the West and the busy market town of Bridport 8 milesto the East. Lyme Regis is 2 miles from Charmouth with theatre, cinema and shopping. Although Charmouth is close to several small towns, the area is rural and within 10 minutes walk you are into very rural West Dorset. Livestock farming predominates and is very unintensive, with beautiful wildflower meadows to be seen in the early summer. Lyme Regis Golf club is only 1/2 mile. Lyme Regis is a small seaside town and harbour. If you like sea fishing there are boats for hire in season. Charmouth is on the main bus route from Weymouth to Exeter with buses every hour and Axminster railway station is only 5 miles with regular services to London. |
